What is Alliance?
Alliance is your ANU virtual web space. All ANU staff and students are able to set up their own private virtual webspace which they can use to store their work and communicate with others - either inside or outside the ANU. Alliance is a web-based, password-protected site where you can access and share your documents in any format, including MS Word, send group emails, discuss/chat/blog from anywhere in the world - you just need an internet connection! You don't need to know anything about making a website.


What does Alliance offer?
Alliance is a way to build your own or collaborative online work environment - you can add as many or as few "tools" as you want from the list of Features. Features include: resources (a space to build your individual or group library of Word, webpages, pdf etc. documents), group calendar, announcements, wiki, blog, discussion board, chat, podcasts and more.

First, go to the Alliance site and have a look at the Features to see what "tools" are available in Alliance and what they can do for you. Then, log in using your ANU Uni ID and Horus/ISIS password. Your Alliance MyWorkspace is already set up for you. Setting up group or project sites is easy - login, click on Worksite Setup, click New. You can set up multiple Alliance sites, each with a different group of people. You can join other people's sites or ask them to join one or more of your sites. Alliance sites can be public (anyone can join) or private (invitation only).

How can you use Alliance?

  • Students working on group assignments -- you can access and modify your group documents, share ideas through the discussion board, chat or blog.
  • Staff working on research projects -- your work is secure, yet you can access your documents from anywhere
  • Committee members -- you can create a password protected committee or meeting space where all members can access notes and documents via the web. Committee members all have the same version of documents which they can download or discuss. Members can send announcements to all (or only some) members quickly and easily.
  • Individuals -- all ANU staff members and students already have their own private MyWorkspace in Alliance. You can store your documents in MyWorkspace and access them when you are away from campus. No-one else has access to your MyWorkspace - it is private.
  • HD Researchers -- you can load documents and research into your MyWorkspace and your work is as close as the internet. If you, or your supervisor, are travelling you can share your work and discuss your progress online, almost as if you were both on campus.
  • Common interest groups -- e.g. student groups on campus. Connect your group through Alliance.
