E-Publishing Theses and Research papers

Preface

"... a piece of research, if it is worth funding and doing at all, must not only be published, but used, applied and built-upon by other researchers." (Harnad, 2005).

"Finally, as far as protecting my ideas go, I feel at least as secure hiding them in plain sight a la Poe's purloined letter. In other words, I've decided not to wait until I secure a book contract to begin establishing a voice and a critical presence in my field" (Kirschenbaum, 1996).

Publishing and making your work readily available is a worthwhile activity and there is much to be gained. However, some skills need to be acquired and some issues need to be thought about by the self archiving author. The Graduate Information Literacy Program (GILP) at the ANU is hoping to assist graduate students in this process by providing the information that follows.

At the ANU publishing your thesis electronically is not a requirement. Once your thesis has been approved by the University you can self-deposit a digital copy using the web form available from the ANU ADT (Australasian Digital Theses) website. ANU E-prints, on the other hand, is an electronic archival database for research literature, which also allows self-archiving.

In the course that follows, you can click on headings in the menu on the left or simply use the navigation arrows at the top and bottom of every page, to advance you one page at a time.

In order for this course to be counted towards your Graduate Course Award in Research Information Literacy it is necessary, at the end of this course, to go through a trial submission of a mock thesis to the Australasian Digital Thesis Program.
