E-Publishing Theses and Research papers

Australasian Digital Theses Program (ADT)

Frequently asked Questions

If I deposit my thesis to the ADT site, do I still have to submit my thesis for marking in the usual way?

Definitely. Thesis deposit to the ADT site is voluntary, but it is compulsory to provide the paper copy.

Detailed official guidelines concerning thesis submission are available from the Graduate School (http://www.anu.edu.au/graduate/pubs/PRG.pdf).

How many files must I submit?

This will depend on the file sizes. If the whole PDF document exceeds 4MB, we recommend the file to be broken up into chapters. Each file should not exceed 4MB (see below).

How do I name my files so they meet ANU ADT file name standards?

Please make sure you use only lower case characters and no spaces when naming your files. Allowed file names are for instance

01front.pdf 02chapter1.pdf 02Chapters1-5.pdf 04GlossaryBibliography.pdf
02whole.pdf 03chapter2.pdf 03Chapters6-10.pdf 05appendix.pdf
or 04chapter3.pdf 04chapter11-15.pdf 12references.pdf
etc. etc. 13appendices.pdf

Naming of files should be as follows (file size needs to be taken into consideration before naming your files - no file to exceed 4MB):

Naming Contains
01front.pdf This file contains title/author information; abstract; acknowledgments; table of contents; introduction; preface and any other introductory text that is not part of the main body of the thesis.
02whole.pdf This file contains the whole of the thesis (including what is contained in the front.pdf file)

Or

Naming Contains
01front.pdf As above
02chapter1.pdf This file contains chapter one of the thesis
03chapter2.pdf Chapter two
04chapter3.pdf Chapter three
05appendix.pdf Appendix
etc.

How and when do I prepare my thesis for the ADT web site?

The conversion to PDF needs to be done before completing the deposit form, as the form also incorporates the uploading of the PDF files to the local server.

It is easy to prepare and submit your thesis to the ADT web site. Simply follow the instructions found at: http://thesis.anu.edu.au/deposit_instructions.html

What type of Adobe software do I require to use to convert my thesis to PDF?

There are a number of Adobe products that would assist you in conversion, these are: Adobe Writer, Adobe Distiller and Adobe 7.

This Adobe software converts your documents in other formats (e.g. Word or Excel) to pdf (Portable Document Format). The appearance of the original document will be preserved.

More information about Adobe Acrobat software is available from Adobe web page (http://www.adobe.com/au).

Where can I access the software?

Adobe Acrobat software licenses are currently available at the Digital Media Suite on Level 2 of the Chifley building (InfoPlace). Opening hours and other information can be found at http://ilp.anu.edu.au/infoplace.
