Editing your PDF File

Links to external multimedia Objects or other Files

Note: Use these instructions only if you haven't been able to set up your links with your word processor - see instructions above.

We recommend setting up your links in your word processed document before conversion (see above in "Preparing your word processed document for trouble free conversion to PDF").

However, if necessary links to external objects can also be created in the PDF file, using Adobe Acrobat 7.0. Use the following instructions or the Acrobat tutorial accessible from the Graduate Information Literacy Program's Online Learning page.

Make sure that the file to be linked is saved in the same directory (folder). These links will be preserved through the conversion process to the PDF format.

  1. Open your document in Adobe Acrobat 7.0
  2. Click on the 'Link' button (if it is not visible, select View > Toolbars > Advanced Editing)
  3. The cursor will change to a cross
  4. Draw a frame around the area you wish to link
  5. The 'Create Link' dialog box will appear
  6. From the 'Appearance Type' section select 'Invisible Rectangle'
(Select 'Visible Rectangle' if you would like your link to be visible.)
  7. Then click on the 'Colour' and choose blue
  8. Ensure the lines are thin and solid
  9. From the 'Link Action' section choose 'Open a file', press 'Next'
  10. Select the 'Select File' button
  11. Navigate to the file required, click 'Select'
  12. Click on the 'Hand Tool' icon, the link will now become active
  13. Save your document. This operation is critical

Repeat this process if you wish to create more links to external multimedia objects.
