Information Searching
Search Strategies and Subject Databases (2 hours - click the link to register)
Students learn how to analyse a topic, identify keywords, formulate searches (using Boolean operators) and refine search results. These skills are taught using multidisciplinary databases and electronic journals. Students also learn how to select information sources appropriate to their own research needs and acquire skills in evaluating information sources and information retrieved.
The Internet and Research (1.5 hours - click to register)
Students are introduced to the web as a research tool and learn how to use advanced search techniques to focus and refine their search results. The importance of critically evaluating web information is stressed. Students are introduced to web-based citation and full-text databases (including Google Scholar and Scopus) and other quality web sources.
