The Information Commons computer network for ANU students
The Information Commons involves around 1,000 computer terminals on campus.
Three operating systems are available: Windows, Macintosh, and Unix. Any member
of the campus community can login at any computer. Every student has 250mb of
disk space accessible from any computer in the Information Commons.

Word Processing in scripts other than Roman script
Multilingual script software installed on all Information Commons computers
enable you to type in English, Arabic, Greek (modern and classical), French,
Japanese, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Korean, Russian, Thai, Urdu,
Vietnamese, Hindi, Sanskrit and Taiwanese. Using Language Input Methods on Information

Animated tours of the Library Catalogue, Library Web Page &
Information Commons
These virtual tours will assist you in using the computer and library resources
available at the ANU. Each tour lasts about 6 minutes and is accessible from
home or on campus. The ANU Library catalogue tour has voice-overs in 8 different
languages or dialects -- English, Cantonese, Indonesian, Japanese, Mandarin,
Thai, Vietnamese and Dzongkha (Bhutanese).

Library Discovery Sessions
Tour of Library buildings this year are available in Chinese, Japanese, Thai
and Vietnamese. Meet in the foyer of the Library building to join your language
group. No booking required.

Thesaurus and Synonyms
When searching Library catalogues, databases or the internet, be aware that
many concepts can be described with a variety of words. These may be different
words with the same meaning (synonyms), or words with related meanings (Thesaurus).
Words with related meanings may "broaden" the concept or "narrow"
the concept. The ANU Library catalogue and databases use a "controlled
vocabulary". A thesaurus is available in MSWord on both Mac and PC computers:
Open MS Word > Tools > Language > Thesaurus
