Digital Research Data

Digital Research Data is not just numbers stored in spreadsheets, but virtually anything that can be stored on a computer. For example: digital photographs, video, survey results, documentation, etcetera. All researchers have digital data. At the least, a researcher will have their publications and electronic copies of academic articles.

What is Data Management?

Data Management (DM) is anything outside of actually using this data. For example: backups, collaborative writing, security, and archiving. Data Management is an unavoidable consequence of working with data - all data is managed in one way or another. Good data management allows you to:

  • work more efficiently,
  • produce higher quality data,
  • achieve greater exposure, and
  • protect your data from loss or misuse.

Data Management Manual

The Data Management Manual gives an overview of data management at the ANU. The benefits of data management are discussed, as well as some of the ANU and ARC policies relating to data. Various DM concepts are discussed in detail, such as backups, version control, metadata, and archiving.

The ANU's data management services are covered, including: Demetrius, Alliance, ANUSF, and ASSDA.

The manual also gives an outline for a Data Management Plan (DMP). DMPs are likely to become a requirement of any research application in the future.

Any questions or feedback on the manual should be directed to: ilp@anu.edu.au

What will the course cover?

The course gives a very quick overview of the material in the Data Management Manual. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions. Some quick demonstrations of Alliance, Demetrius, FTP, and the Pebble fileserver will also be done.
