Modifying Styles

Editing Citations

There may be times when the standard type of citation is not sufficient for your needs, so it is necessary to edit the citations.

ENDNOTE TIP:

It is important that you make a copy of the style you wish to change before making any changes.

Making a Copy of the Style

Such that you can easily retrieve the original style, it is advisable to make a copy of the style you are going to base your changes on before any alterations are made. This acts as a backup in case something should go wrong, or in case you need the original for a future project.

To make a copy of the style you wish to change:

  • From the Edit menu, choose Output Styles > Open Style Manager
  • Double-click on the style you wish to base your changes on
  • From the File menu, choose Save As
  • Give your style a new name and save it into the Styles directory under EndNote

Alternatively, you can create a new style from scratch:

  • From the Edit menu, choose Output Styles > New Style

Whether altering an existing model, or creating your own unique style, follow these steps to make the changes:

  • Choose the part of the style you wish to make changes to
  • Add Reference Types and Insert Fields as required
  • When you have completed the changes, close the dialog box with the in the top, right-hand corner
  • Save your new style

Including Page Numbers

Follow these steps to alter your chosen style so that the page numbers will appear in the in-text citation, for example (Harris, 1998:56) or (Harris, 1998, p. 56):

  • In EndNote, go to the Edit menu and choose Output Styles
  • Select Open Style Manager
  • Choose the style that you created earlier and click Edit
  • Select Templates
  • Place the cursor in the position you wish to add the additional field
  • Click on and select Cited Pages
  • Save your changes
