Editing Citations

EndNote allows you to edit citations that you have inserted into a Word document. You edit citations when you wish to add page references to a citation or you wish to exclude author or publication date details.

Steps:

  • Enter the citation into your Word document. E.g. (1987)
  • Click on the Edit Citation icon on the EndNote toolbar
  • In the pop-up menu make your changes.

Click OK

ENDNOTE TIP:

Not all Styles allow you to enter page numbers by putting the numbers into the Pages column, if this happens try the Suffix field

Using Footnotes

There may be instances where you require the use of a footnote rather than an in text citation. Footnotes can be added to your document in the following manner:

  • Insert footnotes/EndNotes in the usual way in Word by choosing Insert >Footnote
  • Place the cursor in the footnote and insert citation in the same manner as for in text citations
  • If required edit the citation using the Edit Citation function

Formatting Footnotes

Footnotes can be edited by altering your chosen Style in EndNote.

  • From the Edit menu, choose Output Styles
  • Select Open Style Manager
  • Select the style that you wish to apply to your bibliography, citations and footnotes and click on the Edit button
  • From the options on the left hand pane, choose Footnotes > Templates
  • Choose the format of your footnotes

ENDNOTE TIP:

Choosing Footnote Format will allow you to create your own preferred format by adding reference types, adding fields and formatting font and punctuation. Be sure to save a copy of the edited style rather than overriding the original.
