Creating a single Bibliography from Multiple Word Documents
If you have created individual Word documents for each chapter of your thesis, you will have a bibliography at the end of each document. When you come to compile your thesis you will only want a single bibliography at the end of the thesis. The steps below will assist you to do this:
Using Master Documents
Steps
- In each of the subdocuments you will need to unformat your citations, do this by using the Unformat Citations icon
on your EndNote toolbar in Word.
- In Word, go to Outline View and create a Master Document.
- Insert the subdocuments into the master document and then go back and reformat the bibliography by enabling instant formatting, using the Format bibliography icon
.
- In the pop-up window select Instant Formatting, then Enable.
Click OK and you will now have a single formatted bibliography at the end of the document.
When Merging Files
Steps
- In the documents to be merged, unformat the citations using the Unformat citations icon
on the EndNote toolbar.
- Insert the files, and then reformat the citations by enabling the Instant Formatting using the Format Bibliography icon

- In the pop-up window select Instant Formatting, then Enable.
- Click OK and you will now have a single formatted bibliography at the end of the document.
