Having problems with EndNote?

Having problems with Word (e.g. formatting)?

  1. Ensure you have ALL the skills you need to quickly and efficiently use Word - after all, it's your main "tool of trade" for your thesis. Attend workshops on Producing your Thesis in MS Word (4 modules) which will give you a comprehensive set of skills you will need to use Word. Courses are repeated throughout the year and count towards the (fee free) ANU Graduate Course Award in Research Information Literacy
  2. Logon to the online Word training module using your ANU UniID and ISIS password. There are over 50 short "how to" modules, many of which you will need when formatting your thesis.

Can Honours and undergraduates enrol in GILP training courses?

All ANU graduate students with current enrolment status can register. Honours and undergraduate students are unable to register in graduate training. However, Honours students may register in some sessions if there is no alternative session in the ALL STUDENTS courses. Please contact GILP if you have any queries by email: grad.ilp@anu.edu.au.


What GILP training courses are available?

The Learn How guide provides a complete list of training options available to graduate students, including workshops and online options. Hard copies are available in each ANU Library. An online version of the latest Learn How guide is available from the GILP webpage.


How do I enrol in GILP training courses?

You can enrol online from the GILP webpage by clicking on the Graduate Workshops heading. Click on the course(s) you want to attend. Select the session from the list provided and register online by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.



When is the next GILP training course available?

  1. Learn How has a complete list of both "Courses For Graduates" and courses for "All Students". Hard copies of the Learn How booklet are available in each ANU Library. An online version of the latest Learn How guide is available from the GILP webpage.
  2. The GILP training calendar is updated each semester. It provides a complete list of training options in chronological order. See GILP webpage >> GILP Training Calendar

 


Is GILP training free?

Yes, GILP training courses are free to all graduate students (both research and coursework). Some courses may attract a fee (eg NVIVO and Statistical Consulting Unit extended courses). Costs are clearly stated on the enrolment details.


What if I can’t attend my training course? How do I cancel my registration?

You can view your current training registrations, withdraw from sessions and print out your record of completed training through http://anubis.anu.edu.au > Training > Training Registrations



Where will my training session be held?

All GILP training is held on campus. Reminder emails are sent to your ANU email address ONLY (usually two days prior to the scheduled training session) detailing the training venue and directions. You can re-direct your ANU mail to a web-based system like Hotmail or Yahoo (from OLAMS). You will, however, consume part of your web quota when you access your mail in this way.


Does GILP provide IT support?

Before contacting GILP with your general IT questions, please consider the following ANU IT support services:

  1. AskANU IT Consultants are located on Level 2 of the Chifley building. They provide free, one-to-one assistance and training with Information Common password resets, internet quota resets, ANU email, printing, Information Common applications (including Word) etc. For contact details and hours of operation click here.
  2. The Digital Media Suite is located on Level 2 in the Chifley building, and is available for use during Chifley opening hours. The Digital Media Suite provides Advanced multimedia software and hardware and enables scanning, manipulating graphics, CD and DVD burning and video editing. For available software and conditions of use click here.

 

Does GILP provide software applications for my studies?

GILP does not provide free copies of software. However, to access software applications:
  1. EndNote - The only software provided free to all ANU students and staff is EndNote. For information on how to get your free copy of Endnote for your home or university computer click here. EndNote manuals can be borrowed from the ANU Library.
  2. Information Common computers - A huge range of software applications are available to use for free on the Information Common computers. To get a sense of the software currently available in the Information Common visit http://infocommons.anu.edu.au:8080/cocoon/infocommons/List_Applications. Because new software is regularly installed this list may not always reflect the full range of applications available. To request the installation of a particular software application on Information Common computers, send an email to ic.software@anu.edu.au. You will be contacted and asked to provide further details.
  3. Local IT Support Staff (LITSS) are responsible for maintaining the software on postgraduate student office desktops. If you need specific software for your research, the first step is to contact your Local IT Support Staff.
  4. Purchasing specific software for your university computer. Should your area require software to be purchased, the Division of Information Software team provides a university-wide service including: software purchasing, software licensing and software media loans. Often the Software Team is able to negotiate better prices for bulk purchasing and site licenses, so it is recommended that you arrange software purchasing and licensing through the Software Team. What is the ANU Graduate Course Award in Research Information Literacy?

The ANU Graduate Course Award in Research Information Literacy is a one semester equivalent course offered FREE to graduate research students at the ANU. Students who complete the course have developed skills in Information Searching, in Information Management and in Information Technology. The coursework requires students to complete a minimum of 14 training modules. In addition, students complete an advanced Literature Review Project and attend a Research Sources Consultation.


How can I enrol in the ANU Graduate Course Award in Research Information Literacy?

No formal registration process is required. However, please contact the Graduate Information Literacy Program, stating that you intend to start the Graduate Course Award. For full details on registration click here. Download a checklist of course requirements so you can organise your session registrations. Courses attended from 2005 will appear in your ISIS training record and can be printed out from there.

Graduate Information Literacy Program courses undertaken as early as 2003 may count towards your Course Award. Contact grad.ilp@anu.edu.au to ascertain which of your 2003 and 2004 course attendances can count towards your Course Award.

 


What are the requirements for the ANU Graduate Course Award in Research Information Literacy?

You can register in Graduate Course Award in Research Information Literacy if you are currently enrolled in a:
  1. PhD OR
  2. MPhil OR
  3. Masters degree that has a significant research component (e.g. sub-thesis)

Masters by coursework and graduate diploma students are unable to enrol because these degrees do not have the necessary research component.

 


How do I complete the Literature Review Project (for the Graduate Course Award in Research Information Literacy) and where can I submit it?

Please ensure that your literature review fulfils the following requirements:
  1. A 50 to 100 word statement describing your research project
  2. A bibliography of no less than 50 references with abstracts selected from a variety of sources. Each reference must include a brief statement of why the reference was selected and how it will support your project
  3. A log of sources used (e.g. databases and scholarly resources consulted)
  4. A record of search strategies used

The project may be submitted in either MS Word, LaTeX, as a webpage, or in PowerPoint. Point 2 above can be satisfied with an annotated EndNote library. More details and how to submit click here.

 

How do I organise a Research Consultation (for the Graduate Course Award in Research Information Literacy)?

We will organise the research consultation for you. Please do not arrange the research consultation yourself.

The research consultation is held with a subject specialist information consultant. This will involve an in-depth look at sources specific to your thesis project. The research consultation occurs after we have received your completed Literature Review Project. Please email: grad.ilp@anu.edu.au to arrange a consultation.
