Producing Theses in Word 2003 - Modules A-D

This course consists of 4 Modules (A-D) and covers those features of MS Word that are useful for working with long documents such as theses.

Prerequisites: As each session builds on the skills acquired in the previous session, students are required to attend sessions in sequential order. It is also preferrable that students are familiar with the MS Windows environment.

Module A: Formatting Text and Pages

Learning outcomes:

  • Ability to format pages, paragraphs and words
  • Ability to use breaks appropriately
  • Ability to navigate effectively
  • Ability to use Find and Replace effectively
  • Ability to use formatting and special characters

Module B: Maintaining Consistency

Learning outcomes:

  • Ability to use, modify and create Styles
  • Ability to create, use and attach templates
  • Ability to use Outlining

Module C: Navigating and Linking Shortcuts

Learning outcomes:

  • Ability to create and use AutoText and footnotes/endnotes
  • Ability to create links using bookmarks, cross references and hyperlinks
  • Ability to generate an Index
  • Ability to use reviewing techniques

Module D: Compiling your Thesis

Learning outcomes:

  • Ability to create and use Master documents and subdocuments
  • Ability to create Headers and Footers
  • Ability to create Tables of Contents and Figures
  • Ability to insert graphics into Word
